Stranded Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo flooring has gained great popularity in the last few years. This is mainly because bamboo floors are a cheaper alternative to hardwood floors. They are just as strong and beautiful, durable and are eco-friendly. Other advantages of bamboo flooring include the fact that it is resistant to insects and also to moisture. There are a number of different types of bamboo flooring which have different manufacturing processes. One of these types is the stranded bamboo flooring.

Stranded bamboo flooring is a very popular type of flooring. This is because it is one of the hardest types of flooring there is. In fact it is almost twice as hard as oak flooring. The manufacturing process of stranded bamboo flooring is one of the newer processes that results in flooring that ranges in hardness from 3000 to more than 5000 pounds-force on the Janka hardness test. This hardness test simply measures the ability of a type of wood to withstand wear, tear and denting.

During the manufacturing process of stranded bamboo flooring, bamboo fibers are shredded and then compressed under very high temperatures and high pressure of up to 2500 tons. Before the bamboo fibers are compressed, they have to be conditioned to increase durability and make it more resistant to pests and moisture. One method of conditioning is to soak and boil the bamboo fibers in a boric acid and lime solution. The aim is to extract the starch from the bamboo fibers. Starch is what attracts insects to the bamboo.

Once the conditioning in boric acid and lime solution is done, the stranded bamboo fibers are dried. When they dry, they are compressed while glued with a bonding resin.

Unlike other types of bamboo flooring, stranded bamboo flooring will typically not go through the carbonizing process. This is because the carbonizing process, which is used to give bamboo a darker color and involves steaming the bamboo under certain heat and pressure, has the effect of making the bamboo a little less durable.

The stranded bamboo flooring that results from the manufacturing process can be sanded and planed. This type of flooring comes in a variety of colors which makes it suitable for different types of decoration styles and tastes. It is possible to find different intricate styles from the weaving of the bamboo fibers. The flooring is used in homes as it is durable and resistant to scratches and dents, UV resistant as well as resistant to pests and moisture. It therefore withstands wear and tear caused by foot traffic including high heels (you therefore do not have to walk shoeless on such a floor), children and pets. Stranded bamboo flooring is also suitable for use in commercial settings with very high traffic without showing wear and tear. Of course one of the best advantages is the lower cost of bamboo flooring over hardwoods.
