Stained Bamboo Flooring
Bamboo flooring is rather popular among homeowners seeking a new, unique look to their homes. Moreover, it is the flooring option of choice for home improvements projects where homeowners are looking for a fresh design on their floors.
Many people would prefer bamboo floors with their natural honey color. However, you may choose to have stained bamboo flooring in your home for aesthetic reasons. You can choose to have the bamboo floors pre-stained before they are installed or stain them yourself once you have the floors installed.
In order to understand stained bamboo flooring, you need to know the basics of bamboo flooring. Of importance here are the different grains that bamboo floors have. There are three possible grains that any bamboo floor may have. Each of the different bamboo grains identify the different types of bamboo flooring available i.e. horizontal, vertical and strand woven bamboo flooring.
Horizontal bamboo flooring is manufactured by pressing 3 layers of bamboo strips parallel to each other in the same direction. Vertical bamboo flooring is achieved by standing individual bamboo strips together vertically and gluing them to each other. After this is done, the planks are pressed together. Finally, the strand woven bamboo flooring option is achieved by fusing bamboo strips under intense pressure with the help of a bonding agent such as low VOC adhesive.
With this basic information, you can comfortably order your stained bamboo flooring from your manufacturer. Any worthwhile manufacturer will have some basic brochures you can look through so as to know exactly which color of stained bamboo flooring you want. As such, you will have to choose the type of color for your bamboo floors as well as the original color of bamboo i.e. whether natural or amber (achieved through the carbonization process). Some of the popular colors used for stained bamboo flooring include oak, cherry, walnut and black.
Your manufacturer will need to know exactly which bamboo flooring you need, i.e whether horizontal, vertical or strand woven. It should be noted that with each of the different grains, a different stain effect will be achieved. For instance, choosing to have a cherry stain on a horizontal bamboo flooring with natural/original coloring will have a lighter stain effect than the same stain on amber-colored horizontal bamboo flooring.
If you choose to color the stained bamboo flooring yourself, then you will have to take all the precautions to work in a dust-free environment. This should be done by sanding and sweeping of the floor which removes any previous stains present on the bamboo floors. The next process is staining the floor with your color of choice. Staining should be done with two coats of permeating stain and a paint brush. The self-staining process ends with the sealing of the floor with polyurethane to make the floors impermeable.
This article is of course just presents the general information concerning stained bamboo flooring. For full instructions for doing it yourself you will need to consult with the manufacturer or a flooring specialist.
